Week 2 Friday Night: King Steals the State's attention, Catholic Central Stomps, Saline Goes Nuclear
Thursday already had its say. Friday was supposed to be the leftover slate. Instead it produced some true statewide heavyweight fights.
Detroit King went into Orchard Lake and beat two-time defending champ St. Mary’s in three overtimes. Catholic Central treated Davison like a tune-up. Saline put 59 on Skyline. Romeo punched another zero onto the scoreboard. And down the board, Friday night still had enough one-score games and blowouts to fill a second recap.
Game of the Night: Detroit King 44, Orchard Lake St. Mary’s 42 (3OT)
This was the game. D-3 #4. King at D-2 #1. St. Mary’s. First meeting since 2006. And it needed three overtimes to get settled.
St. Mary’s jumped out 16-0. King looked cooked. Then Illinois commit Darryl Flemister came off the bench and turned the night into a movie. He led a touchdown drive to make it 16-14. He hit Willie Walker for a 75-yard score. In the third overtime, after St. Mary’s went up 42-36 and failed the two-point try, Flemister threw a fade to Michigan State commit Don Spillers to tie it, then found Walker again on the winner. King 44, St. Mary’s 42. Road win. Chaos. Instant classic.
What to make of it: King is 2-0 and just took the scalp everybody wanted. St. Mary’s is 1-1 and still a championship program, but the “untouchable” sticker came off Friday night. This one will follow both teams into October.
Shockers

If you had St. Mary’s winning this comfortably, Friday night would like a word. The Eaglets were the defending-champ side of the bracket. King stole it on the road in the third extra session.
Ypsilanti Community 12, Ypsilanti Lincoln 7
City game. One score. Lincoln had the Week 1 name-brand loss to Okemos. Community just made the rematch conversation local and ugly in the best way.
Lowell 35, St. Joseph 34
One point. Two programs that can win in November. Lowell leaves with the kind of result that looks louder in Week 8 than it does on Saturday morning.
Chesaning 44, LakeVille 40
Forty-point night on both sides. Somebody’s defensive coordinator is still in the parking lot.
Traverse City West 22, Grand Rapids Christian 20
West Michigan private-school brand versus a northern program that just refuses to go quietly. Two points. Friday night special.
Calumet 24, Ontonagon 22
U.P. football. Two points. No style points required.
Lakeshore 21, Niles 16
Southwest grind. Lakeshore stays in the “we win the close ones” pile.
Teams That Looked the Part
Detroit Catholic Central 56, Davison 14
No. 1 versus a ranked Saginaw Valley name, and CC did not blink. Fifty-six to 14 is how a favorite answers the “are they still the favorite?” question. Davison is not a cupcake. Catholic Central made it look like one.
Saline 59, Ann Arbor Skyline 0
After the Rockford statement in Week 1, Saline came back Friday and posted a shutout 59-burger. That is a Division 1 problem with no off switch.
Romeo 48, Port Huron Northern 0
Week 1: Romeo beats Adams at the Big House. Week 2: Romeo drops a 48-0 MAC hammer. The Bulldogs are not sneaking up on anybody anymore.
Brother Rice 42, River Rouge 6
Rice keeps stacking. Rouge is a name. Forty-two to 6 is a statement anyway.
Rockford 42, Muskegon 6
After the Saline beating in Week 1, Rockford needed a response. Muskegon is still Muskegon. Rockford looked like it wanted the tape to say something different this time.
Zeeland West 50, Midland 20
The Dux keep scoring like the Dux. Midland found that out on Friday.
Oak Park 48, Waterford Kettering 0
OAA Friday night, and Oak Park erased it.
Detroit Cody 52, Detroit University Prep 0
Christian Cabbil threw two and ran for one. River Burke piled up 175 all-purpose yards. Cody is 2-0 and looking like a Detroit problem.

Anchor Bay went to overtime in Week 1. Dakota just put a MAC result on the board that looks like December football: physical, 24-7, no panic.

What To Make Of It
King over St. Mary’s
Do not crown King the state. Do not bury St. Mary’s. Do file this under “the Division 2/3 conversation just got honest.” Flemister coming off the bench and winning it is the clip of the weekend.
Catholic Central 56, Davison 14
Davison can still be a Valley problem. It is not a Super 25 problem until it proves it can live with CC’s speed for four quarters. After Friday, that proof is still missing.
Saline 59, Skyline 0
Saline is not a “good defense, new quarterback” story anymore. It is a complete team that just posted back-to-back statement scores.
Ypsilanti Community 12, Lincoln 7
Lincoln has athletes. Community just won the city game 12-7. That is the kind of result that decides who owns the east-side narrative for a month.
Fruitport 27, Godwin Heights 16
OK Silver noise. Godwin Heights is supposed to be in that title picture with Belding. Fruitport just put a dent in the brochure.

Vestaburg’s first win in nearly two years, four turnovers forced before half. That is not a pretty box score. That is a program exhaling.

Dexter is 1-1 after the Brighton beating in Week 1. This was the “are we alive?” game. They answered.

Thursday already sorted Cass Tech, East Kentwood, and the rest of the early-week heavyweights. Friday was supposed to be quieter. Then King and St. Mary’s played a three-overtime heavyweight fight, Catholic Central reminded the state what No. 1 looks like, and Saline posted another score that belongs on a poster.
Week 3 is when the league races start telling on people. Friday just made the résumé pile a lot more interesting.
